| Zusammenfassung: | The first part of the article is dealing with the present state of the study in Mandaeism, primarily in literature (new editions, modern language studies) and in the history of the gnostic-baptismal community which can be dated back to gnostic and jewish-baptismal movements to the first or second century A. D. The second part presents some details about the situation of the Mandaeans in modern times (since 1958) in Iraq and in exile (Europe, USA); the community is the target of a deep change by conflicts inside and outside of the traditional area of living: the lost of the Mandaic language and religious knowledge, tensions between the (modern educated) laymen and the (traditional thinking) priests, the founding of non-religious community centres (club-houses), the reform of the traditional rites (especially the baptism), relations with the Christian churches, publications of journals and books (partly in Mandaic). Only in some sites of the Iranian area (Chuzistan) the Mandaeans preserved their language in form of modern dialects (Modern Mandaic). |
