520 | |a There exists an appropriation by the libertines of the metaphor that has it that all the world’s a theatre, and we can find different versions in the works of Naudé and La Mothe Le Vayer. The latter in particular, in his reworking of pseudo-Aristotle (De mundo) and Plato, developed a metaphor that depicts the human condition as being similar to that of a puppet in the hands of the Primum Mobile, or as a toy in the games of the gods. We find in the background, readings of a very different nature, virtually opposite, of the Platonic text by two renowned Renaissance authors: Marsilio Ficino and Pietro Pomponazzi. Finally, an anonymous radical clandestine text such as the Thephrastus redivivus (1659), provides a political and atheist exegetical reading of the ludus as practiced by religious legislators.
