Als solcher in den Sozialwissenschaften lange Zeit abgelehnt, erfuhr der Animismus-Begriff vor allem ab den 1990er-Jahren in der Sozialanthropologie eine Revitalisierung, während er in der Religionswissenschaft weiterhin zurückhaltender, vor allem in Bezug auf Materialität verwendet wird. In diesem Artikel werde ich die Frage beantworten, worin sich das zeitgenössische sozialanthropologische Verständnis des Animismus von Tylors Konzept unterscheidet. Hierzu werde ich Tylors Animismus-Theorie mit vier sozialanthropologischen Definitionen des Animismus vergleichen und abschließend argumentieren, dass sich die sozialanthropologische Konzeption des Animismus als Ontologie fundamental von Tylors Animismus-Verständnis unterscheidet und als solche auch in der Religionswissenschaft verstärkt Anwendung finden kann. | ||
| 520 | |a In his book Primitive Culture Edward Burnett Tylor (1832–1917) defined the term animism as the supposedly "primitive" form of religion in an evolutionistic model of religious development. Rejected in this sense for a long time in Social Science the term animism underwent a revitalisation in the 1990s in Social Anthropology, whereas in Religious Science the term is currently used more reserved, mostly with regard to materiality. In this paper I will analyse the differences between the new anthropological and the Tylorian understanding of animism. For this purpose, I will compare Tylor’s concept of animism with four contemporary anthropological definitions of animism. Finally, I will argue that the anthropological concept of animism as an ontology differs fundamentally from Tylor’s theory. As such, the new animism can be used as a fruitful concept in Religious Science, too. | ||
