While the first circle about the flight to Pella is based on references of Christian patrology (Euseb., Hist. Eccl. III, 5, 3; Epiphan. Haer. XXIX, 7. 7-8; XXX, 2, 7; De Mens. 15), the second circle about the escape of Yoḥanan ben Zakkai to Yavneh rises from Rabbinic sources (ARN A, 4; ARN B,6 / Lam. R 1, 31; b.Gitt. 56a-b). Both legendary circles are tested and compared in dimensions of their historicity, traditional development and final redactions. -- In spite of their different aiming, the legendary circles represent a common mechanism of a foundation-legend connected with religious groups which were strongly stressed by the fall of Jerusalem in 70 C.E. - Jewish Christians and Rabbinic Jews. The legends provided a renewed identity through the participation of their protagonists in the Apostolic or Rabbinic succession.
