Or face aux constructions théoriques et juridiques, les parcours individuels de sécularisation des religieuses révèlent le plus souvent une précarisation sociale et économique, même dans le cas d’un mariage. | ||
| 520 | |a The cost of secularization: Nuns and their economic trajectories during the Reformation (France, Switzerland, England): By renewing discourses on the secularisation of nuns, protestant reformers opened the way to a series of reflexions, focusing on political and down-to-earth aspects of the departure from convents. The first solution offered to ex-nuns was marriage, which was considered as an economic and moral solution preventing carnal excesses. Protestant authorities would offer them dowries, whereas in France, these women struggled to inherit if they married, and, in Marian England, were even forced to divorce. The individual trajectories followed by secularised nuns must be questioned. Indeed, they reveal that this process mostly led this women to experience social and economic precarity, even in the case they were married. | ||
