| 520 | |a In order to understand the current situation of the Christian communities in the Middle Eastern regions, it is necessary to study the ways in which Islam has institutionally organized throughout history the relations between the different religious denominations – in particular with Christianity – present in its vast empire. This is a problem that Islam has had to face since its origins, that is, since the time of Mohammed. The ancient legal institutions, such as the dhimma and the Ottoman millet, provided institutional forms of guarantee and discrimination against those who were «protected». This regime, which lasted until the end of the nineteenth century, fostered, among the different Christian denominations present in the Caliphal Empire, the development of a strong inter-communal bond and the consolidation of a «communitarian» sentiment and culture. Today, this bond is being undermined in various ways by modernity. | ||
