Damaged soon after discovery, and poorly preserved in spite of two subsequent restorations, this painting has hitherto remained enigmatic. In this paper, in light of the important results of the new restoration of the painting, I would like to offer new and important elements supporting my interpretation of the meaning of the scene, which, in my opinion, represents a celebrated event of early Islamic history (canonized by Ibn Iṣâq in his biography of Muḥammad): namely the embassies sent by Muḥammad to the six «kings of the earth» — including the Ghassânid phylarch and the lord of the Yamâma — in the year 6 H(= AD 628)
