Après avoir résumé la lecture symbolique que l’on peut faire de l’œuvre, cette étude propose d’interpréter la présence de personnages historiques dans le récit comme une forme de sacralisation, en lien avec le motif de l’immortalité astrale des grands hommes. En particulier, le rôle de Pythagore et de Platon au sein de l’œuvre semble fournir une clef de lecture du sens philosophique, voire théologique, des Noces de Philologie et de Mercure. | ||
| 520 | |a As a trace of the Neoplatonic context of its composition (5th century AD), the allegorical narrative of Martianus Capella’s Marriage of Philology and Mercury features several authorities in ancient philosophy and sciences: just like the gods, these characters are present in the heavenly assembly that welcomes Philology after her apotheosis and her heavenly ascent. After summarizing the symbolic reading of the allegory, this paper aims to study the presence of historical characters in the narrative as a form of sacralisation linked with the motif of the astral immortality of great men. In particular, the roles of Pythagoras and Plato within the work seem to provide a key to reading the philosophical or even religious meaning of the Marriage. | ||
