Le cycle apaméen affirme, par l’image du triomphe de Cassiopée sur les Néréides, la signature néoplatonicienne de l’ensemble et récupère les figures d’Ulysse et de Socrate dans deux autres tableaux ; enfin, une couronne contenant l’inscription εὖ χρῶ parodie le chrisme. La mosaïque de Nea Paphos, avec la même signature, offre un parallèle ironique à quatre scènes chrétiennes, par le moyen d’images mythologiques gréco-romaines. La résistance païenne n’est pas un vain mot. | ||
| 520 | |a From the beginning, Christians were accustomed to borrowing from the paideia or to sacralizing pagan figures, which gave rise to pagan reactions, both in texts and in the visual arts. My scope here is to analyze two series of mosaics from the fourth century, one discovered in Syria (Apamea), the other in Cyprus (Nea Paphos). The Apamean series offers four pictures: Kassiopeia triumphing over the Nereids, as a Neoplatonic signature; the Return of Odysseus (meeting Penelope/Philosophy); Socrates teaching among the Sages; the last panel (inscription εὖ χρῶ) is a parody of the chrismon. The Cypriot mosaic, with the same Neoplatonic signature, presents four mythological themes as ironical parallels to Christian scenes. Pagan values continued to resist. | ||
