520 | |a It is known that post-Plotinian Neoplatonists developed a highly complex system of authorities in order to give credence to their doctrines: Plato, Aristotle and Pythagoras, as well as ancient theologians (Orpheus, Homer and the Chaldean Oracles) are thus endowed with a status bordering on the sacred. However, the use of such - rather burdensome - authorities does not preclude a degree of adaptation: one can still dismiss respectable figures if they do not respect the principles ruling correct exegesis; on the other hand, when an authority is in fact used, overinterpretations, refinements, subtle dismissals or neglect etc. allow philosophers to remain autonomous and to develop their own theses under the cover of interpreting the Ancients.
