Description
Résumé:In recent scholarship on the history of monasticism from Late Antiquity to the late Middle Ages, there have been determined efforts to trouble or rewrite the “master narratives” told by monk-historians about their orders in centuries past that claimed the uniformity, harmony, linearity, and inevitability of their development. Countering these narratives, recent scholars, nearly all of them not professed religious, have insisted instead on referring to monasticisms in the plural to embrace the ubiquitous, diverse, dynamic, and permeable forms of religious life to which this term did and still can refer. The two-volume The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West, edited by Alison I. Beach and Isabelle Cochelin, showcases the work of many of these recent scholars in order to give voice to what they call the “polyphony of monasticisms” (15).
