They spread spontaneously and quickly in many Middle Eastern countries, but only in Tunisia did they achieve appreciable results – with the establishment of a democratic order – although many fragile elements remained. In other cases, authoritarian regimes have returned to power, while Yemen, Libya and Syria have descended into tribal conflicts and civil war. In recent months, the streets in many Arab countries have once again mobilized, calling for major economic and social reforms, i.e. more freedom and more work. The pandemic has brought everything to a halt, but the problems remain and have even worsened. | ||
