While most Americans are in favour of the withdrawal, President Biden’s decision to end the US engagement has been met with strong criticism. There are three factors which were the immediate cause of the collapse of the Ghani government: the corruption of the Afghan government; Pakistan’s double-dealing; and, the intrigues of former Afghan President Hamid Karzai. The decision to withdraw was justified by the political-moral principle of self-help. This article also takes a close look at the challenge that Afghan refugees bring to the United States’ difficult migration system and considers the response to the Afghan humanitarian emergency as part of America’s post-conflict duty to the Afghan people. | ||
