Starting from a number of «exotic» ethnographic examples and then arriving at others concerning patients admitted to a Roman hospital, the author illu-strates how - even in modern and secularized Western society - the tendency to distin-guish between the scientific explanation of the pathogenesis and the search for a moral explanation for the illness’ origin is still widespread. He also tries to show how the use of biomedical therapies does not exclude the parallel need to make use of ritual practices. Finally, he explains how it is possible that the management of meaning can be not only functional to the management of the disease on a conceptual and emotional level; it can also generate an expectation of recovery in patients that may trigger endogenous proces-ses whose effectiveness can be empirically verified. | ||
