Zusammenfassung:This paper begins with two clarifications. The first one concerns the notion of innovation. The focus will be not so much on the updating and the implementation of techniques already in use, but rather on more radical forms of innovation, those that imply a «paradigm shift» and that could be defined as «non-cumulative or of high discontinuity». Innovation will be credited with the capacity of creating or expanding the sphere of contingency. The second clarification regards the notion of religion as distinct from those of «faith, belief, and spirituality». The purpose will be to examine how their respective differences may manifest themselves with respect to the phenomenon of innovation. The second part focuses on the relationship between religion and innovation. It brings to the attention the value of contingency (its production and maintenance) as a contribution offered by certain Judeo-Christian religious traditions to more radical processes of innovation - maybe not an exclusive contribution, but certainly a very important one. The paper ends with some remarks on the difficulties experienced by a number of (once quite innovative) variants of Judeo-Christian religious traditions. Once more, these difficulties reveal the contingency of contingency.
