Summary: | The purpose of this paper is to present the interreligious place of Vulcana Băi in Romania. In the early nineties the International Ecumenical Center, a non-governmental organization of laics and clerics of different religions, was founded in Romania. Its pur-pose was to promote religious pluralism, ecumenical dialog, cooperation, and deeper mutual understanding among various religions. One of its most notable projects was the establishment of an interreligious complex in the late nineties. Built ex novo in Vulcana Băi (Târgoviște county), this complex is a multi-religious place, comprised of three worship places (an Orthodox Church, a Synagogue, and a Mosque) belonging to the three main monotheistic religions. Currently, the church functions as an Orthodox monastery for men, while the others two worship places are rarely used for prayers by the respective religious groups. This article analyzes the events linked to the con-struction of the complex as well as its intended purpose. It also attempts to answer questions related to the typology of this shared place, establishing its role in avoiding religious intolerance and fundamentalism, and identifying the dynamics involved in the production and management of such a project. |
