Zusammenfassung:Introducing the section devoted to pilgrimage to Fátima, this text offers an overview of the relevant literature that pays special attention to the configuration of religious sites as well as to the importance of gender and corporeality in the context of pilgrimage studies. Building on these and other contributions to the field of pilgrimage studies, the articles that form part of the special issue explore different aspects of the devotion at the Marian shrine of Fátima in Portugal. Focusing on different aspects such as the tensions emerging from the restrictions imposed to pilgrims by local authorities (Fedele this volume), the strategies used by the pilgrims to reduce physical pain (Pe-reira this volume), or the ways in which women visiting Fátima confirm through their devotion their gendered roles within their family (Gemzoe this volume), the articles create a complex and fascinating portrait of the lived religion in Fátima, demonstrating the importance of an ethnographic approach to understand the multiple and often contradictory dimensions of pilgrimage. Rech’s epilogue to the special issue analyses sanctuaries as «complex systems» and reveals the entanglements of sacred and profane, tourism and pilgrimage.
