Description
Summary:The text reproduces the author’s considerations presented at his leave-taking lecture as director of ISR and focusses on the complex relationship between the sphere of religion, moral life, and law in complex societies such as those of the late industrial world. After some biographical premises, the phrase “religious studies” is examined to highlight a different use in the various European language areas. From this polysemy, the author reflects on the relationship between an “external” and “internal” analysis of the religious phenomenon. The relationship between theological reflection, the specific product of religions of the book, and religion as a human science, after a period of conflict, can and must become complementary and enriching for both the so diverse disciplines. Secondly, the author examines the renewed interest for ethics, a cultural phenomenon that emerged during the 1970s and which shows no sign of diminishing, but rather seems to be intensifying and differentiating. A third point the leave-taking lecture explores is the phenomenon of law. This social regulatory tool is subject to va-rious tensions. The law also has a tendency to try to regulate moral conflicts, as a rule with highly controversial issues also within ethical reflection. The author attempts to highlight the ambivalent nature of the phenomenon of an ethicization of the law and, by referring to his biographical experiences, defends the critical role that every ethical scholar must exert when encountering particularly conflict-affected legislative processes.
