Zusammenfassung:This article analyses the revolutionary implications of the Christian doctrine of Incarnation in relation to the Classic and Hellenistic ontology. It reconstructs the phil-osophical background of some of the main concepts of the theoretical, rhetorical, exe-getic, and aesthetic tradition (such as typology, allegory, and anagoge) that the Christian polemists used to break with the paradigm of knowledge of the ancient world. It then explores the intersection of different fields of research as related by a central theme: the generation of the Son from the mother. The core of the Christian novelty is identified in the doctrine of the double nature of Christ—human from the mother and divine from the Father. The article then examines the iconopoietic implications of these changes in Late Antiquity and the artistic products as visible traces of the Christian revolution in the ancient weltanschauung.
