| 520 | |a This paper focuses on the thorny question of the doctrine of priesthood of all believers, which is often regarded as the determinative center of Protestant theology, and its relationship to the instituted pastoral offi ce. The former concept is often played off against the latter; however, this misstates the Reformer’s distinction of the two spheres of relationship and the basic idea of mutual service in and through God’s Word. The point of departure is the disagreement between Martin Luther and other magisterial Reformers with the medieval understanding of the offi ce of pastor. They argued that the pastor’s offi ce and responsibility of preaching the Word, although indispensible, possesses no spiritual superiority or special holiness. The second and longer part of the paper highlights Bullinger’s systematization of the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers as well as of the pastor’s offi ce in the Second Helvetic Confession of 1566, one of the most representative documents of the Reformed tradition. The third part briefl y discusses some recent Protestant understandings of the pastoral offi ce. | ||
