Summary: | Christian identity is a subject much referred to in Catholic ecclesiastical speech, yet behind this familiar expression hides a set of meanings that are seldom disclosed and that remain blurred and ambiguous. This essay aims to analyze the use of this expression in pastoral documents promulgated by the Italian Episcopal Conference between 1986 and 2005. The study shows a deliberate indistinction between a personal and an impersonal concept of identity, which makes ecclesiastical rhetoric applicable to all contexts and occasions. My thesis is that the emphatic recourse to the theme of identity is a form to mitigate current weaknesses regarding a way of thinking about faith. |
