The binary of sexual identity (male/female) is a particularly strong system of categorization that expands from the identifi cation of human beings to other living beings and also infl uences abstract forms of reasoning. Intersexuality is therefore a particularly interesting case that upsets the binary system exactly in its seemingly reliable biological basis. Does intersexuality provide an ideal for ambiguous and fluid identities and a model for overcoming binary thinking? The analysis of two films about intersexuality (Tintenfischalarm [Scharang 2006], XXY [Puenza 2007]) shows that an ambiguous sexual identity is diffi cult to accomplish in a society still structured along binary schemes, but also that the case of intersexuality can help to question norms and assumptions presumed to be “natural” and eternal. | ||
