Summary: | Miriam and Deborah are two of the few prophetesses found in the Old Testament. Exodus 15, Numbers 12, and Judges 4-5 present their prophetic words. Miriam’s and Deborah’s songs are interpreted by the Church Fathers in diverse ways, their gender being a central issue in the texts. The interpretations are situated between the conviction of the Spirit’s activity in both men and women and Paul’s interdiction of women’s speaking and teaching in the churches (1 Corinthians 14:34), with sometimes ambivalent results. |
