And yet, exactly when it is stripped of the obligation to depict and signify a sacrality extrinsic to it, the work of art forcefully reclaims its presence, capable of completely involving anyone enjoying it, offering itself in a perceptible articulation of sense. The aesthetic experience of artistic enjoyment allows us to take conscience of what we are and of our complexity. In this sense it may implicate a truly spiritual experience. This becomes especially clear, for example, in the case of a work which immediately led to a crisis in the opposition between sacred and profane, The Ecstasy of St. Teresa sculpted by Bernini in the middle of the 17th century | ||
