Summary: | In this paper we consider Antonio Fogazzaro’s novel The Saint, which the writer from Vicenza published a century ago. The book quickly became a modernist manifesto for the European public opinion because of its reform-oriented religious topic and its clamorous editorial success. After a brief look at the novel’s making, the essay investigates the book’s role in the modernist crisis at the beginning of the 19th century and its influence on today’s Catholic Church. |
