It constitutes poetic counter worlds, in order to interpret, shape, and even modify everyday life. Real poetry can make the overlooked visible and it can reveal the deeper dimensions of life. The biblical psalms are instances of such poetry. They are poetically condensed life. Through them life itself speaks – in its desires and fears, in its doubts and hopes, in its joy and suffering, but also in its power to fight for justice and against lies and violence. In the psalms life passionately comes to voice: it wants to be lived as a full and healing life before and with God. This is the existential dimension of the psalms: they seek and celebrate life as God’s gift. They protest against everything that threatens and destroys life. And above all, they remind God himself, that he has committed himself to the welfare of this life and that he is responsible for its good completion. Thus, the psalms offer foundation, shape, and purpose to each individual journey through life, to the history of the Jewish people, and to the church, even to the whole of creation. | ||
