In this context, religions that cohabit the same region not only meet but sometimes clash. The only constructive way forward for humanity and for the religions themselves is dialogue, which presupposes mutual respect and cooperation. Dialogue may have many forms according to the various situations and needs, but the various forms are complementary to one another. If it is to be made possible, then the masses of the faithful of the various religions must be educated, and this education must be promoted by both religious and civil authorities. It must not be based only on socio-political opportuneness alone, but on the very foundations of the various religious traditions. For Christianity, these motivations are rooted in the heart of the Christian message. Dialogue, however, must not eliminate proclamation. That remains at the heart of mission and is the criterion by which to judge the validity of mission and to promote discernment in elaborating a theology of mission and dialogue.
