520 |a The present paper focuses on God as a subject of joy in the Old Testament. After a short survey of the so-called «anthropopathisms», i.e. expressions of various human sentiments, emotions, and passions related to God in the Old Testament, a few texts (from Deuteronomy, Psalms and from the prophetic books – Isaiah, Jeremiah and Zephaniah) discussing God’s joy are analyzed in greater detail. Several aspects are taken into consideration: the connection of God’s joy with other anthropopathisms, especially with predilection and wrath, the Hebrew terms from the semantic field of joy, used in the studied texts, the objects of God’s joy and their various nuances according to the specific character of the respective texts and, last but not least, the relation between human joy and God’s joy. God takes pleasure in the whole of his good and beautiful creation, he laughs at the vain efforts of the wicked, but he rejoices in the restoration of the rest of Israel which, after having experienced the trials of exile, will rejoice again in the delightful presence of its Savior and Benefactor.
