Summary: | This article proposes to analyze the critical reflection of Franz Overbeck on then liberal protestant theology of the second half of the 19th century. For theological liberalism the historical study of Christianity ought to uncover its authentic core, liberating it from dogmatic overstructures, which rendered it alien to modern sensibility. For Overbeck, on the contrary, it is the affirmation of historical consciousness itself, which inevitably destroys religious faith. Therefore, theology, and especially liberal theology, which seeks to reconcile modern science and Christianity, appears to Overbeck as a betrayal both of science and of faith. Its only result being that of a Christianity emptied of any content, which becomes the instrument for religious legitimization of contemporary society and its ideals. |
