É um panorama da primeira tentativa, desde uma perspectiva protestante, de desenvolver uma ética social cristã no país, durante os anos 1950 e início dos anos 1960. Atenção especial é dada ao desenvolvimento do movimento chamado Igreja e Sociedade no Brasil e às realizações deste movimento, que estabeleceu um ethos para o surgimento de um novo relacionamento entre o protestantismo e a sociedade brasileira. Acompanha-se o desenvolvimento do movimento Igreja e Sociedade até a conferência do Nordeste, em 1962, que marcou o clímax e começo do declínio do movimento. Conclui-se que, apesar de seu fracasso em estabelecer-se nas igrejas, esse movimento teve um impacto duradouro sobre o cristianismo e a sociedade brasileira, afetando direta e indiretamente movimentos posteriores. | 520 | |a This article offers a description of the ecumenical face of Brazilian Protestantism, and its response to the encounter with poverty and injustice in Brazil. It is an overview of the first attempt from a Protestant perspective to develop a Christian social ethics in Brazil, during the 1950s and the early 1960s. Special attention is paid to the birth of a movement called Church and Society in Brazil, and to the accomplishments of this movement, which created the ethos for a new relationship between Protestantism and the Brazilian society. The article follows the development of the Church and Society movement up to the Northeastern Conference, in 1963, which marked the climax and the beginning of the fall of this movement. The analysis of this movement in the 1950s and early 1960s leads to the conclusion that despite its failure to establish itself within the institutional churches, it has had an enduring impact upon both Brazilian Christianity and society. | ||
