A seguir, ele arquiteta sua discussão chamando atenção para os efeitos destrutivos práticos da presunção teórica de superioridade cristã. Transitando de várias maneiras entre questões teóricas e práticas, e expondo suas implicações recíprocas, o ensaio acrescenta algumas observações sobre a passagem irreversível, em grande partejáocorrida, de um exclusivismo teológico para um inclusivismo que esteja em condições de abordar positivamente a realidade do pluralismo religioso. O ensaio trata das tradições religiosas universais e pergunta por suas potenciais contribuições para a transformação individual e social. Mas sua realização central está em seu intento tanto lúcido quanto bem-sucedido de desacreditar a idéia de um vínculo necessário e de jure entre o Cristianismo, por um lado, e a ciência, a tecnologia e a democracia modernas, por outro. Dessa forma, por causa de sua lealdade comum à Regra de Ouro, e apesar dos males que ajudaram a sacralizar, todas as religiões universais podem ser vistas como contribuindo, numa parceria em pé de igualdade, rumo a uma forma moral e espiritual superior da vida humana. | ||
| 520 | |a This essay starts by questioning the assumption of the "absoluteness of Christianity", an issue with which theologian, philosopher and sociologist of religion Emst Troeltsch wrestled at the beginning of this century. It further frames its discussion by calling attention to the practícal destructive effects of the theoretical assumption of Christian superiority. Moving back and forth between theoretical and practical issues, as well as their mutual implications, it then adds some remarks on the - to a great extent already occurred - irreversible move from theological exclusivism to an inclusivism which can address the reality of religious pluralism in positive ways. The essay addresses the world religious traditions, and asks for their potential contributions for both individual and social transformation. But its main achievement can be seen in its lucid and successful attempt to disclaim the idea of a necessary, de jure link between Christianity, on the one hand, and modern science, technology and democracy, on the other. In this way, because of their common allegiance to the Golden Rule and in spite of the evils they helped to sanctify, all world religions can be seen as contributing as equal partners to a higher moral and spiritual shape of human life. | ||
