Zusammenfassung: | The Sacrifice of Abraham is one of the episodes—they are not many—that have been depicted in the art of each of the three Abrahamic faiths. This article focusses exclusively on the subject of the Sacrifice of Abraham itself, leaving aside other passages from the Old and New Testament with which the subject is associated. The article explores five distinctive aspects of the iconography of the subject: the preparations for the sacrifice and the journey to Mount Moriah; the ferocious determination of the father – or his consternation; the way he treats his son and how he prepares him for what lies ahead – with unshakeable determination or with a touching display of paternal tenderness; the rebellion, passiveness or agreement shown by his son; the degree of doubt, perceptible in the father’s attitude but sometimes also in that of the son, regarding the incomprehensibility – indeed even the madness of what God was asking of him or whether he had a mistaken understanding of God’s command. |
