Il dénonce surtout le champion d'une orthodoxie intolérante, dont l'intéresse moins la grande victime, Servet, qu'un adversaire, Sébastien Castellion, qu'il érige en père du protestantisme libéral et des valeurs mêmes de la modernité. Il est probable que Buisson ait aussi visé, à travers Calvin, Guizot; la thèse qu'il a soutenue en 1891 sur Castellion a été un événement intellectuel, et un manifeste contre une conception de l'histoire qui pardonnerait trop aisément les crimes du passé au nom de «l'esprit du temps». F. Buisson is partly to blame for the dark nineteenth-century image of Calvin as an authoritarian legislator who allowed Geneva to resist Rome lastingly. He saw him as the champion of intolerant Protestant orthodoxy and found its main victim Servetus less congenial after all than Castellio who became to his eyes the founding father of liberalism and religious modernity. His critique was probably also aimed at Guizot. Buisson's 1891 doctoral thesis was an intellectual turning point and a protest against a whole concept of history which exonerates past crimes in the name of the «spirit of the time». Ferdinand Buisson ist ein Doppelbeitrag zum oft negativen Calvinbild des 19. Jahrhunderts zurückzuführen. Auf einer Seite begrüsst er das fast beänstigende, doch kräftige Werk des autoritären Gesetzgebers, der fähig wurde, lanfristig Genf gegen Rom entgegenzustellen. Vor allem aber weist er auf den Kämpfer einer intoleranten Othodoxie, der zum Opfer nicht so sehr M. Servet als S. Castellio gefallen ist. Dieser wird von Buisson als Vater des liberalen Protestantismus und der modernen Werte kanonisiert. Wahrscheinlich fasst Buisson durch Calvin Guizot ins Auge. Buissons Dissertation von 1891 war sowohl ein akademisches Ereignis wie auch ein Manifest gegen eine Auffassung der Geschichte, die dazu führen könnte, den Übeltätern der Vergangenheit auf Grund des damaligen Zeitgeistes zu bequem zu verzeihen. | ||
