Island effortlessly belongs to the first and this novel uses some of its fundamental stylistic elements. These elements help us interpret the novel as an original and relevant example of ecological Utopia (it redraws, with typical features of intentional communities, the relationship between man, environment, animals, resources). On the other hand, this novel also contains elements that refer, in a covert way, to the Dystopian tradition. These relationships are in part of reaction and opposition to that tradition, in part of assimilation and reuse. This essay examines the dual citizenship of Huxley’s novel, and proposes an interpretation that favours the prevalence of its first identity. Questo saggio mira ad interpretare l’ultimo romanzo di Aldous Huxley, Island (1962), inserendolo in due contesti significativi apparentemente opposti, quello del pensiero utopico e quello della tradizione distopica. Island si colloca facilmente all’interno della tradizione utopica, di cui ri-cal ca alcuni stilemi fondamentali, che permettono di interpretarlo come un esempio, originale ma rilevante, di utopia ecologica, in quanto ridisegna, con tratti tipici delle comunità intenzionali, il rapporto tra uomo, ambien te, animali, risorse energetiche. D’altra parte questo romanzo contiene anche elementi che rimandano, in modo sotterraneo, alla tradizione distopica. Tali rapporti sono in parte di reazione ed opposizione a quella tradizione, in parte di assimilazione e riuso. Il saggio esamina questa doppia cittadinanza del romanzo di Huxley, e propone un’interpretazione che propende per la prevalenza della sua prima identità. | ||
