Summary: | This publication provides chemical evidence for the presence of a preparation of crude opium in a Cypriote Base Ring I juglet, type I Ba (II) found in Egypt to be dated to the period spanning the later Second Intermediate Period and the early new Kingdom (1600—1450 B.C.) The results are discussed with respect to the opium trade hypothesis put forward by Merrillees in 1962, who states that the drug was transported in special juglets from Cyprus to Egypt. This hypothesis postulates common knowledge of opium in Egypt at this time. |
