Essendo un contributo alla comprensione dei conflitti in Africa, questo articolo richiama l’attenzione dei ricercatori e policymakers al ruolo delle istituzioni politiche nella proliferazione di questi conflitti nel continente. L’argomento principale di questo articolo è che la semplice adozione di alcune istituzioni politiche non garantisce la coesistenza pacifica nelle società africane spesso eterogenee e a volte divise. Invece, ciò che conta di più è il design di queste istituzioni. Con numerosi riferimenti ai casi concreti, questo articolo dimostra come i design della cittadinanza, la struttura dello stato, la forma di governo, il sistema elettorale e la tensione tra stato e società contribuiscono ai conflitti nel continente. | ||
| 520 | |a There has been growing concern about the frequent outbreak of communal conflicts in Africa and there seeming resistance to the solutions, so far, proffered. As a contribution to understanding communal conflicts in Africa, this essay calls the attention of researchers and policymakers to the role of political institutions in the proliferation of these conflicts on the continent. The core argument of this essay is that the mere adoption of certain political institutions is not a guarantee to peaceful coexistence in Africa’s heterogeneous and, sometimes, deeply divided polities. Rather, what matters the most is the design of these institutions. With ample reference to concrete situations, this paper demonstrates how the designs of citizenship, state structure, form of government, electoral system and the tension between state and society fuel conflicts on the continent. | ||
