José Rodríguez de Castro identified the "Spanish Jewish" authors, so important in the Middle Ages. The Inquisition was abolished on three occasions, by Napoleon in 1808, in the Cortes of Cádiz in the midst of a great controversy and in 1820. These abolitions expressed the crisis of the Old Regime and the rupture of previous historiography. With important inquisitorial documentation, the frenchman Juan Antonio Llorente not only made a "critical" history of the Court, he also highlighted the repression against the Jews. Sempere Guarinos, also frenchified, linked the foundation of the Inquisition and the plundering of the Jews to the creation of the Spanish State. Along these lines, J. Amador de los Ríos placed the Middle Ages and the Jews as defining elements of the identity of the Spanish. His work would have a great influence on Modesto Lafuente and the Spanish liberal historiography. | ||
