Tardini was side by side with Eugenio Pacelli, as the latter was Secretary of State of Pope Pio xi; then he became prosecretary of State of Pope Pio xii and finally Secretary of State of Pope John xxiii. The cardinal Silvestrini was called by Tardini to work at the Secretariat of State since 1953; and in this first-hand account he tells how his master, and he himself with him, faced the most important events and choices of the Holy See's diplomacy: from the threat of the totalitarianisms to the World War ii, from the Cold War to the detente policy. The account leads to a more and more global scenario where we can see the warning signs of the Ostpolitik of the Holy See in Europe and then towards China. In the end, Domenico Tardini embodies the transition of the Holy See's diplomacy from a model still longing for Christianitas to a new one, more dialoguing and open-minded. (English) | ||
