The constitutive role of the material text of the ilan is communicated by the synecdoche yeri‘ah ([parchment] sheet) commonly used to refer to such artifacts in the 14th and 15th centuries. Two definitive characteristics of ilanot – their map-like nature and the mimetic significance of the act of scrolling – are also shown to be intimately related to their materiality. | ||
