Summary: | In Cuban Jesuit schools, sports practice was a core component of student life. The objective of this article is to demonstrate sports' importance in student education in Cuban Jesuit schools, demonstrating that sport represented an attractive element of their program for Cuban elites. During the colonial era, and in contrast with the other religious schools in the colony, physical activity marked a distinctive feature of Jesuit schools, especially fencing and, towards the end of the nineteenth century, baseball. With the procIamation of independence and the establishment of the republican system in May 1902, the Society was forced to update its study plan, which led to a reworking of its socio-political discourse and to assume new nation-specific cultural features in its program, which entailed, in the sports' arena, the game of baseball. This new educational environment was conducive to the introduction of a variety of sports such as basketball, volleyball and soccer. (English) |
