| Zusammenfassung: | In the Hebrew Bible, there are some attestations of a word עֵט (‘eṭ), which designates a writing tool, be it a stylus (made of iron), be it a reed or rush pen. So far, this word has resisted an etymological explanation. It is proposed here that it actually derives from an Egyptian word ‘ṭ which is attested in some late sources as a designation for a reed or rush pen. Such a derivation would fit well with other demonstrated influences of the Egyptian writing culture on the ancient Hebrew one. |
