Kircher's approach is placed in this context. This approach was rejected by eighteenth-century scholars, and even more so after the work of Champollion. The extension of the understanding of hieroglyphs was developed on the basis of the conceptions of Vico, Warburton and Herder. It now also referred to non-Egyptian characters as well as to biblical signs.
