Si Warburton juge, comme la plupart de ses contemporains, la méthode de Kircher peu scientifique, le Theatrum Hieroglyphicum et la China Illustrata lui servent néanmoins de sources précieuses, la plupart des gravures de l'Essai étant issues de ces deux ouvrages dont il reconnaît ainsi la valeur documentaire. | ||

This article examines the way in which Warburton surpassed the work of his predecessors and maintained a complex relationship with the Egyptological work of Kircher. Although Warburton, like most of his contemporaries, considered Kircher's methods as unscientific, he nevertheless drew most of the engravings in his Essay from the Theatrum Hieroglyphicum and the China Illustrata, thereby recognising the documentary value of these two works. | ||
