Description
Summary:The ancients sought to treat diseases by dealing with their supposed causes. The most frequent causes assigned were divine judgment, demons, and the influence of the stars. Magic was the systematic attempt to influence occult powers, and was freely used in the treatment of disease. In modern times scientifically established causes for disease are identified, and healing employs scientific processes. To resort to outgrown theories and remedies is evidence of a lack of moral faith. The emotional power of ancient rites and beliefs is so strong that there are constant recurrences of discredited cults of healing.
