While interpreters have usually contrasted Jesus with the prophets, holding that he introduced a higher type of religion, the prophetic type probably furnishes a better clue than do most of the terms commonly employed. The present article indicates certain aspects of the prophetic consciousness which are characteristic of Jesus. Attention is called to the national predictions of Jesus, and the moral convictions entering into such predictions are analyzed. The relation between such predictions and the eschatological hope is then discussed, and the doctrine of retribution is considered. Finally the question is raised as to the scope of Jesus' social teaching.
