520 |a By the end of the fourth century the Lord’s Prayer was a fundamental component of the baptismal liturgy and Eucharistic celebration in nearly all of christendom and the Liturgy of the Hours later on as well. It is unlikely, however, that these practices had begun much earlier: with the exception of the Didachè, an isolated prescriptive text unconfirmed by other documentation, there is no indication of any use of the Our Father in the first three centuries. This lack of evidence is accentuated all the more by the fact that the Lord’s Prayer is the object of extensive comments in all early Christian tracts and catecheses on prayer. In the beginning it probably constituted a model for Christian prayer and became a formula to be repeated word for word only later, after the Constantinian shift; an analogous process can be found in the history of the institution of the Eucharist.
