| Zusammenfassung: | This contribution intends to indentify and document the role played by Sebastiano Valfrè (1629-1710) in inspiring such figures as Joseph Cafasso, John Bosco, Leonard Murialdo, Jospeh Allamano, Francesco Faa’ di Bruno, and the Marquis and Marchioness of Barolo, all spiritual heirs of this Turinese follower of St. Philip Neri. Valfré’s memory, reinvigorated by beatification (1834), was especially treasured and passed on by the Oratory of St. Philip Neri which was at the centre of a dense network of relationships with representatives of nineteenth century Turinese society thanks to Fr. Felice Carpignano in particular. The Salesian and Vincentian spiritual tradition to which the ‘social saints’ related also constituted common ground shared with the spirituality of Valfrè who was himself a representation and intermediary of that very tradition. The ‘social saints’ saw Valfrè as a model of apostolic and priestly zeal, educational and civil commitment, and untiring charitable efforts directed at all types of poverty. With particular regard to charity, a relationship is highlighted between the continuity/discontinuity of nineteenth century social saintliness, which strove to tackle the challenges of modernity, and that which was personified in Valfrè who shared in the ideological paradigms of ancien régime society imbued, however, with a new and more open sensibility. |
