Zusammenfassung:In his Exhortatorium Iudeorum Joachim of Fiore addresses the Jews to persuade them to the conversion as soon as possible. For this purpose, he quotes and discusses passages of the Old Testament concerning preannouncements of the Holy Trinity and of the Incarnation and showing the necessity to move from a literal to a spiritual interpretation of the Bible. The new critical edition published by Alexander Patschovsky (2006) is destined to represent a milestone for future research about the attitude of the Calabrian abbot concerning the Jews. This article clarifies the extent of Joachim’s debt to the Epistle 1 by Peter Damian, reasserts his dependence from Beda about the interpretation of the biblical tale of Tobiah and discusses critically the date proposed by the editor. A renewed examination of the work shows doctrinal aspects that are destined to disappear or to be deeply rearticulated and transformed in the mature production of Joachim. Therefore, the article proposes to bring back the genesis of the work to a period of his activity which is earlier than the one proposed by the editor.
