| 520 | |a This paper aims to consider, through the historical-comparative methodology of the history of religions, integrated with some elements of a discursive analysis of the texts, the well-known utterance which the Muses address to Hesiod in the Theogony. First of all, we will try to demonstrate that the Mnemosyne’s daughters words are not self-contradictory. In fact, by pointing out their capacity to say «many lies similar (pseudea) to realities (etyma)», but also, when they wish, to «proclaim truths (alethea)», the Muses are referring to two different and complementary levels. The “truths” concern the divine, theogonic subject of the poem; instead, the «lies similar to realities» regard the poetical medium of the communication, involving images et metaphors. So, it deals with the question of the fictionality. Secondly, we will try to stress that this fictional level of the divine communication between the Muses and the poet is consistent with the nature of the Mnemosyne’s daughters as goddesses. In fact, according to the “theology” of the Homeric and Hesiodic poems, and of many other archaic and classical works, the immortals usually appear in disguise to the mortals. Analogously the Muses inspire to the poet a song which communicate the divine world realities under the veil of the poetic form. | ||
| 520 | |a En deuxième lieu, nous chercherons à mettre en lumière comment la communication au poète, de la part des Muses, de vérités divines, à travers la formulation fictionnelle propre à la poésie, correspond à la nature des fille de Mnémosyné en tant que déesses. En effet, selon la “théologie” propre aux poèmes homériques et hésiodiques et à nombre d’autres oeuvres d’époque archaïque et classique, les immortels d’habitude se manifestent aux mortels sous de faux semblants. De manière analogue, les Muses inspirent au poète un chant qui communique les vérités du monde divin sous le voile des formes poétiques. | ||

En effet, en affirmant leur capacité de dire «nombreux mensonges (pseudea) tout pareils aux réalités (etyma)», mais aussi, quand elles le veuillent, de «proclamer des vérités (alethea)», les Muses se réfèrent à deux niveaux différents et complémentaires. Les “vérités” concernent le contenu divin, théogonique, du poème, tandis que les «mensonges tout pareils aux réalités» portent sur les moyens poétiques de communiquer, par images et métaphores, les contenus: il est donc question du fictionnel, en tant que représentation discursive de la réalité. | ||
