Summary: | This lecture was delivered at the Library of France (Paris) on October 26, 2012, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Louis Massignon, in order to remember how greatly he influenced his Christian brethren in the twentieth century. Faithful to science because he was a perfect Islamologist, faithful to love because he was close to his friends, and faithful to God because he was priest and consecrated, he always bore witness to an intransigent Christian faith from the day of his conversion (1908) until his death (1962). To this end, he developed, with the Badaliya association, a spirituality of evangelical compassion and spiritual substitution for the benefit of Muslims, centred above all on testimony, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and pilgrimage. For many Christians engaged today in Christian-Muslim dialogue, Massignon’s life remains exemplary - an invitation to Muslims and Christians alike for reciprocal understanding, mutual esteem, and a helpful brotherhood, all in the name of Abrahamic hospitality. |
